On Wednesday, March 11, a roundtable of regional stakeholders titled “The automotive industry in the Silesian Voivodeship in the face of transformation challenges: how to address them using the region’s resources” took place at the Katowice Special Economic Zone (Tychy Subzone) in Tychy.
The event, led by analysts from the Social Policy and Sustainable Development Programme of ISP – Małgorzata Koziarek and Maciej Pańków – provided a space for discussion on how the automotive and transport sectors can respond to challenges related to EU climate policy and increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers.
Polish car assembly plants and component producers – strongly integrated into European and global supply chains – are currently facing declining and unstable demand. Reports of layoffs are also becoming more frequent. The discussion therefore focused on solutions that can be implemented at the regional level: supporting companies in finding new markets and adjusting production profiles, as well as helping workers to upgrade and adapt their skills.
The meeting took place within the framework of the project “Transition to ecomobility: strengthening regional just transition processes in the automotive industry”, implemented in the Visegrád countries under the leadership of the Slovak think tank CELSI and co-funded by the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
